Soap Opera Children
by HVLong on June 24, 2009

So I was catching up on my Young and the Restless. I have to laugh at Victor reprimanding Nick about reuniting with Sharon because of the detrimental effect it could have on Summer and Noah. After all, it’s the children that pay for their parents’ selfish behavior. Nick should know, after all, how many times did his Nicki and Victor break up, make up only to break up again? And exactly how many children has Victor fathered in and out of marriage?
Don’t get me wrong. I think Noah’s got issues, but it’s not about his mother and father getting back together, it dates back to the detonation of their marriage in the first place when Nick couldn’t keep it in his pants and his older sister died. Unfortunately, kids on soap operas get a really raw deal and it’s amazing that ANY of them grow up to be remotely well-adjusted. In fact, if I lived in a soap opera town, I’d probably invest in regular psychotherapy for my kids.
SORAS (soap opera rapid aging syndrome) is a very popular device on soaps. Nick’s been SORAS’d and so has Victoria, Lily, Abby and Billy. Yet, coming to town soon is Phillip IV. He’s older than most of these kids, because he was born in 1988. I know, I was there. I watched Nina go through her pregnancy and I remember when she was the spoiler in the Cricket and Phillip III relationship.
I love that Nina is back in town and I’m really looking forward to having Phillip IV back, but I don’t want him coming back to town as a child. He should be at least in his early 20s. He and Billy should be butting heads and he should give Cane a run for his money where Lily is concerned.
Soap opera children get a raw deal, who are your favorite soap opera kids? Come back tomorrow, we’re going to talk about Starr Manning over on One Life to Live.
