Deconstructing Grey’s Anatomy

Arguably, Grey’s Anatomy is anything but tepid these days. Derek and Meredith are going strong, and Meredith even donated a piece of her liver for her loser father because Lexie begged her too. Derek and Mark are friends again, Callie is an attending and smoking it up with Arizona Robbins and even Bailey’s making it work despite losing her husband to divorce, intern and friend George to a bus accident and Izzie to a firing. But there is still something wrong with Grey’s and it’s been wrong for a long time. 

Bring Back Burke

Cristina summed it up in a recent episode when she sat, sobbing her frustrations out to Meredith. Her relationship with Owen is precarious, particularly because of Owen’s personal issues and therapy. She’s also not getting the teaching she needs because Seattle Grace doesn’t have a Cardio Attending of any caliber. She feels passed over, snubbed and lost. She misses Burke. Not for his relationship because that’s a whole other can of worms, but because when Burke was there she was learning and she was affecting lives and she was holding hearts in her hands.  In that moment, I couldn’t have agreed with Cristina more.  Burke is exactly what Seattle Grace needs.

While Isiah Washington might not be an option, he’s hardly the only strong black actor out there who can bring gravitas to his scenes. It’s been long enough that with the right actor, fans would even accept the recast (trust me, soap fans have been coping with this for years). Bringing back Burke means bringing back a very strong, alpha male edge to compete with Derek and with Owen surgically. It’s a better love triangle for Cristina than some ex of Owen’s showing up to mess up Yang’s life and frankly, the Chief needs Burke and so does Bailey.  Burke balances the show. So come on Shonda,  you made me believe in ghost sex for Izzie, Meredith seeing the afterlife and even Callie discovering she likes girls, so you can do it. You can bring back Burke!
