Young and the Restless Episodes
From LoveToKnow Soap-Operas
Young and the Restless episodes remain the highest rated daytime soap opera episodes that are aired 5 days a week, year round. Fans of The Young and the Restless enjoy tuning in to the episodes that air each day for many reasons, ranging from the characters to the storytelling to the direction and cinematography.
Young and the Restless Episodes
Writers of Young and the Restless episodes follow the formula of serialized drama, which serves as the foundation for most daytime dramas. Serialized drama is one where the narrative is told through one or more characters in linked installments. Each character on the show possesses a unique storyline, a history, a series of linked relationships to other unique characters and their interactions with each other and in opposition to each other creates the canvas that viewers tune in to see.
Unlike episodic television, episodes of the Young and the Restless do not tell self-contained storylines. A storyline that affects Victor Newman will undoubtedly have ripple effects on his ex-wife Nikki, children Victoria and Nicholas, their romantic partners and even his long-time nemesis Jack Abbot. The key to storytelling on a daytime drama is allowing viewers to develop a relationship with the characters and to empathize with him or her as they undergo their journeys carried out over multiple episodes that may span weeks, months and in some cases years.
Serialized Drama
Ultimately, the modern day Young and the Restless (Y&R) is a direct product of every storyline and every character that has populated the canvas since the show’s debut in 1973. While some fans are intimately aware of the history of the characters, not all the fans are. The writers are then tasked not only with telling the current storylines, but also inserting references, homage and respect for previous storylines.
When Katherine Chancellor discovered that Jill Foster Abbott, her longtime rival and nemesis, was her biological daughter, she suffered a stroke. The detonation of this particular storyline hit all the right notes in the episodes dealing with it and the ripple effects were felt for months. The right notes included the homage to their history and Katherine’s memories of their many confrontations, barbs and bad blood. New viewers were able to see these confrontations through flashbacks if they were not present for the first time. This unique combination of history, characterization and storyline collision is what makes daytime serial drama so appealing.
Episode Guides
The pacing of Young and the Restless episodes is a contributing factor to the show's success. Creators Bill and Lee Phillip Bell believed in investing in the characters, drawing out every nuance and allowing viewers a very full picture of their characters. When characters can loathe a character’s actions, yet still love the character (such as is the case with Jack Abbott) then the writers must be applauded for doing such a fantastic job.
Unlike episodic television, Y&R airs every day of the week, so episode guides are hard to find that will detail each and every episode for the last 25 years. Daily updates can help, and most websites dedicated to the show provide storyline and character histories that allow new fans a greater understanding and old fans an opportunity to walk down memory lane.

Hang in there VT -- some the medical aspects are bordering on negligible, but it's Ashley's mental health that has me more concerned than anything else.
-- Contributed by: HVLongSeriously, the Adam/Ashley having a baby story line is out of control!!! I mean who has a baby and there is no pain, no bleeding, and no doctors checking on you (down there). One doctor came to check on her the entire time she was in the hospital but was intercepted by that creepy doctor working with Adam. I'm sorry this is just over the top and too unbelievable. Writers, I can't wait for Adam to be reveled...get it together sooner than later!!!
-- Contributed by: vrt_03Delores, I'm sorry you feel that way. Baby swapping and stealing has actually been a daytime staple for years. In fact, there was a great hue and cry when Ashley took Victor's sperm to inseminate herself with Abby.
