From LoveToKnow Soap-Operas
The Vampire Diaries episodes air on The CW network. The series follows the lives of Mystic Falls residents. Born in the 1800s, the Salvatore brothers became vampires around the time of the Civil War. Their return visits to the region are often accompanied by a rise in animal attacks and human deaths.

The Vampire Diaries program was adapted for television by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec. Williamson is the screenwriter behind the popular horror films Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer and the teen drama series Dawson's Creek. Plec, who also worked on Scream 2 with Williamson as well as the ABC Family Drama Kyle XY. Together, these writers have introduced L.J. Smith's novels to television, using the storyline from the original series as a guideline.
In the novel series, Elena is a blonde cheerleader and embodies many of the qualities that have been divided between Caroline and Elena in the television series while the TV series version of Bonnie embodies both Bonnie and Meredith. In the first ten Vampire Diaries episodes, the friendships of Bonnie, Caroline and Elena are tested by secrets:
- Bonnie is a witch
- Elena is dating a vampire
- Caroline is used by Damon and later begins to flirt with Elena's ex-boyfriend Matt
The arrival of the Salvatore brothers in these first ten episodes changes the lives of the citizens in Mystic Falls. Stefan Salvatore refuses to drink human blood, satisfying his need to feed on animals. His older brother, Damon, is far more hedonistic and feeds indiscriminately. In his short time back in Mystic Falls, Damon killed Vicki Donovan (turning her into a vampire that Stefan had to stake later), Coach Tanner, Bree, Lexi and many other unnamed victims.
Why the Salvatores Came Home
In the initial episodes of the first season, Stefan is haunted by Damon's arrival. Damon reminds Stefan that he promised him an eternity of misery and was just seeking to keep that promise. But both Salvatore brothers hid their reasons for returning to Mystic Falls.
Stefan visited his family in the area regularly, every few years, but after seeing the Gilbert car go off the road and into the river, he is captivated by Elena's resemblance to Katherine. He spends months learning about her before deciding to get to know her in person. Damon's arrival coincided with the return of the comet, one of the three ingredients Damon needed to free Katherine from the tomb.
While each Salvatore brother arrived with a private agenda, they decide to work together in the second half of the season. Stefan's plan is littered with deceit as he plans to kill Katherine and the other vampires if and when he and Damon can free them. The tension between the brothers continued to mount as Damon's friendship with Elena took on a life of its own.
Keep Up with The Vampire Diaries
More vampires appear to be flocking back to Mystic Falls. Jeremy befriended one in the library (Anna), while another works as a bartender at the Mystic Grill and seeks to court Bonnie. Both are working to free Katherine from the tomb, but they are not allied with the Salvatores. These may be the same vampires responsible for turning Logan Fell. The second half of the first season delves into the history of Alaric Saltzman and his vendetta against Damon.
