Toni's Spoiler Site
From LoveToKnow Soap-Operas
Toni’s spoiler site is a must-stop by website for many Young and the Restless fans. The site often features Y&R spoilers with details about what’s going to happen next to Genoa City’s Abbotts, Newmans, Fishers and more. LoveToKnow Soap Operas editor Heather Long enjoyed sitting down with site creator and updater Toni Helen to find out a little bit more about what makes the site tick.
About Toni’s Spoiler Site
Toni’s spoiler site is filled with ‘this just in’ and ‘with a grain of salt’ spoilers for Genoa City fan favorites. Toni Helen shares the history behind her spoiler site and love for soap operas with LTK readers.
What sparked your creation of a spoiler site? How long have you been up and running? Do you see Y&R ahead of other time zones? Is this how you are able to post a day ahead?
Hey! That's 4 questions disguised as one. Like many other viewers I started watching with my mother as a child - and though I took some breaks along the way, I was still a devoted fan when I first cautiously merged onto the Information Highway in 1998. At that time I had no idea the show was broadcast a day ahead in Canada (on an East Coast station in the morning as well as a local station in the afternoon). When I first started posting on a Y&R Message Board, this quickly became apparent when other members 'yelled' at me for 'spoiling' the show.
After profusely apologizing, I continued to post daily recaps for those fellow fans who were interested (of which there were many). As my daily posts grew longer and more detailed, I merged it with my newest hobby at the time, web design - and in 1998 I created a site hosted free by Geocities. Over time the site graduated to warrant its own domain name and paid hosting - and grew to include quizzes, a recipe section and message board. And as the site grew, fortunately, so did its readership.
Your site focuses primarily on The Young and the Restless. Is this the only soap you follow or is it in the only one you focus on for the website?
The site focuses on the Y&R because it is indeed the only soap I follow. I DID briefly provide recaps on DAYS and B&B (the other shows aired a day ahead in Canada) - but I was never able to become as involved in these soaps, certainly not to the point that I was prepared to invest an extra 90 minutes in front of my TV and computer each day. Apart from a brief stint watching GH (in the Luke and Laura days) I've mostly only watched the Y&R.
When you judge spoilers received from other sources, how do you judge one more valid than another? How do you break it down?
The spoilers listed on 'This Just In' are mainly submitted by my readers - or culled from my own message boards. For the most part, they're accurate, though some I receive are more obviously fans speculating - and sometimes wishing - than factual information. Spoilers attributed to the soap magazines are deemed more reliable (even if they are often somewhat misleading - or less sensational than the headlines promise). With their 'take with a grain of salt' warning, 'This Just In' spoilers come with no guarantee, and like a telephone-psychic reading, are provided for entertainment purposes only.
Name the best storyline you've watched and why you would label it the best.
Oh gosh - so many great storylines (some so good the writers reuse them - again and again). David Kimball comes to mind. Honestly, who can forget a villain who requests surgery to look like David Hasselhoff - only to find the word 'KILLER' carved across his forehead once the bandages are removed? His bad luck continued months later when escaping from ace Detective Paul Williams, he jumped into a closet that turned out to be a garbage chute - leading to a trash compactor. D'oh! Why do I love this storyline? Not very often are comedy and suspense so successfully merged.
Name your top 3 actors on daytime and why you would label them as such.
Hmmm - top three actors. That's tough. Had you asked for characters, I might have answered differently. I appreciate the veterans - if for no other reason than their ability not to be written off the show. For decades I've enjoyed the feud between Victor Newman and Jack Abbott. Peter Bergman (Jack) is a terrific actor who must have it in his contract that he gets the wittiest dialogue.
Christian LeBlanc (Michael) also stands out as a talented actor. He's extreme -over the top - just short of being slapstick in his delivery. Where Peter conveys great emotion with only his eyes - or the slightest of facial expressions, CLB uses his whole body and being. Though the acting styles are as different as the characters themselves, I appreciate the humor both bring to what might otherwise be an overly dramatic, or heavy show.
Sticking with the veterans, Jeanne Cooper (Katherine) is clearly the matriarch of Y&R. Imagine 37 years playing the same character!? And now, at the age of 80, after her second stint playing two characters simultaneously, she's currently carrying a major storyline - and embarking on what could be a new romance. You've gotta respect that!
Your site features a lot of different items: puzzles, recipes and more --how do they fit into your ideal vision of the site?
Over the years I've added different sections to the site – and update them to varying degrees of success - usually as time allows. The recipes are added by users - so it basically runs itself (though I do have to go and remove the inevitable ads for Viagra and loan providers that magically appear there). Since conception, the site has almost been 'by accident'. I never really had an 'ideal' vision for the site - and so, it continues to evolve based on reader feedback. I had no idea a few posts on a soap opera message board would lead to all this – over a decade later. But, in the end, it's only because of my loyal readership – their support and encouragement - that the site continues. Without them, there'd simply be no point.
Love To Know Soap Operas would like to thank Toni Helen for taking the time to share her insights with readers, and wishes her continued success with her fun and entertaining soap opera website!
