Telenovela Rosalinda
From LoveToKnow Soap-Operas
Telenovela Rosalinda was the last telenovela that star actress and musician Thalia appeared in. Airing in 1999, Rosalinda told the story of a young girl from a good family torn between two suitors.
About Telenovela Rosalinda
Telenovelas focus on areas of the human condition and on the romantic entanglements of young people and how they affect their families. The family is very central to Mexican telenovelas and Rosalinda is no exception. Rosalinda's family is poor, but the family is dedicated to each other. Rosalinda is raised by a step-mother, because her biological mother is in prison for killing a man. When her step-mother passes away, Rosalinda encounters Fernando Jose, the son of the man her biological mother killed.
Rosalinda falls in love with Fernando despite the odds and their history. While overcoming their shared history could be plot enough for the telenovela Rosalinda, their lives are further complicated by an illness that robs Rosalinda of her memories and Fernando's own step-mother who wants to tear the two apart and take their daughter Erika. She reveals to Fernando exactly who Rosalinda is and Fernando, in his anger, abandons Rosalinda while his step-mother takes their daughter.
Depressed and nearly suicidal, Rosalinda is admitted to an asylum. She represses many memories and nearly perishes in a fire. The family presumes she is dead, but she survives and during her bout with amnesia, Rosalinda meets and falls in love with a second man, but Fernando's skill with the piano retrieves Rosalinda's memories and now she must decide between the two men she loves.
Tragedy and Triumph
The telenovela Rosalinda reflects a common theme in the tragedies and triumphs that befall the innocent Rosalinda. She is not responsible for the actions of her mother, yet she pays the cost when her husband feels deceived and abandons her. She loses her child for a time to the scheming Valeria (Fernando’s step-mother) and eventually loses her mind. Yet, her innocence saves her from the fire at the asylum and introduces her to Alex, the man who makes her famous as a singer.
The loss of her memory is a double-edged sword because it frees Rosalinda from the grief of Fernando’s abandonment and losing Erika, but it also robs her of the love she associated with them. When her memory returns, it is a struggle for her to reclaim her child and her life. She must now also choose between Fernando and Alex.
Thalia
While the telenovela Rosalinda was the last actress Thalia made, she remains hugely popular around the world. Many of her telenovelas are repeated over and over again. The actress turned singer continues to release musical albums and is featured on the Anastasia soundtrack singing the Spanish version of Journey to the Past.
Televisa is a large Spanish language media corporation and producer of many of Thalia’s telenovelas. Until 2005, Televisa held a contract for Thalia to make more telenovelas, but the actress refused. They finally canceled her contract when it became apparent that she would make no more.
