Scoops versus Speculation

A soap scoop is a valid piece of information that gives viewers some idea of what will happen in upcoming episodes on the show. Good examples of scoops are show summaries found in soap opera magazines or websites, press releases announcing a new actor joining the show, and news items announcing the departure of an actor.

Scoops can be fun to read, especially when they act as teasers, rather than giving a detailed account of what's to come. The downside to scoops is that they often lead to speculation in online communities, and it can be difficult to separate the fact from the fiction.

When fans get a solid soap scoop, AMC message boards and forums begin to buzz with members throwing out their own interpretations of what the scoop means for the cast of characters. For example, in 2008, actress Rebecca Budig announced she was not returning to the show when her contract was due to end in 2009. Fans began wondering if her character, Greenlee Smythe, will be written out of the story or replaced by a different actress. When the same situation arose in 2005, Budig left the show and was replaced by actress Sabine Singh.

Early AMC Scoops

Back in the 1970s when All My Children was first starting out, scoops and spoilers were hard to come by. Fans could get a brief overview of future episodes through print magazines and a few entertainment television shows, and the AMC production team used this to their advantage. Often lead actors and actresses would drop small hints during interviews, foreshadowing plot twists and upcoming shockers.

Susan Lucci, who has played the character Erica Kane since the show's inception, was often the subject of interviews about All My Children, and she became adept at giving away only a slight suggestion that something big was about to happen on the show without ruining the surprise for viewers.

One of Erica Kane's story lines in the early 70s was based on her having an abortion. Controversy swirled over this particular turn, mostly because Erica's reason for terminating her pregnancy was that she didn't want to lose her job as a model. The media covered this story with gusto, and Lucci was the subject of many interviews at the time. She kept fans watching the show, even if they disagreed with the subject matter, by not revealing what the ultimate result of the storyline would be.

AMC Scoops in the Internet Age

Fast forward to the present, and scoops are still a hot topic for viewers. Now, however, these All My Children spoilers and bits of information are much more accessible, and come at us in real time. As soon as a reliable scoop comes out, websites pick up the news and it spreads quickly.

In the early 2000 years, many past characters have returned to All My Children, including Janet Green (played by Kate Collins), Barbara Montgomery (played by Susan Pratt), Jesse Hubbard (played by Darnell Williams), and Angie Baxter (played by Debbi Morgan). All of these character reprisals became major scoops for soap opera websites, where fans eagerly read and commented on the stories.
