In the Providence TV show pilot, Dr. Sydney Hansen returns home to her family in Providence, Rhode Island. At its heart, this series is a family drama that follows in the footsteps of series such as Our House and 7th Heaven.

Melina Kanakaredes leads the cast of the Providence TV show. Dr. Sydney Hansen (Kanakaredes) enjoyed a glamorous job in Beverly Hills, California working as a plastic surgeon to the rich and famous. Tired of the superficial life, she wants to return home to her family home in Providence.

Her sister Joanie's wedding gave her the needed excuse to fly home. Joanie is pregnant with her daughter at Hannah and preparing to marry Hannah's father. Their mother Lynda (Concetta Tomei of China Beach) passes away just before the wedding, halting the ceremony and devastating the family. Returning home to Los Angeles briefly, Sydney discovers her boyfriend is cheating on her -- with another man. Sydney returns home to Providence a second time, to help her grieving family and start a new life away from the glitz of nose jobs, breast implants and eye lifts.

Sydney struggles to focus on a new specialty in general medicine, working in a clinic and treating family, friends and new patients. She worries about her own sanity, however, when she begins dreaming about her mother frequently giving her advice on how to handle her life.

Sydney's Family

Sydney's family endures their own trials and tribulations. After losing her mother just before her wedding, Sydney's sister Joanie (Paula Cale) gives birth to her daughter Hannah. She decides against marrying the baby's father and goes back to work at her father's vetrinary clinic. In a comic twist of fate, Joanie learns her food (disgusting by human standards) is very appealing to dogs. She takes the intiative to open a canine deli.

Joanie resents her sister and is often jealous of her success. In typical sibling fashion, she often gives Sydney a hard time about her life and romantic choices. The sisters, however, do share a mutual respect for each other and often work out their differences.

Dr. Jim Hansen (played by veteran Mike Farrell) is Sydney's grieving father. He provides a warm center for all three of his children as they look after each other. He often relates better to his animal patients than to other people.

Sydney's brother Robbie (Seth Peterson) struggles with a gambling addiction and is more often in trouble than out of it. He settles down when he meets and marries Tina.

Love and Medicine

Sydney's romantic woes are compounded when she is sued for malpractice. Her attorney Owen defends her in court while romancing her and eventually marrying her. Their wedding is featured in the final two episodes of the series. Getting to the altar isn't easy in the Hansen family.

The day before Sydney's wedding she is held hostage by a man who shot his own son. He shoots another doctor before turning himself in. The couple planned to move to Chicago after the wedding when Owen received a partnership offer with a law firm in the Windy City.
