Family Drama:Our House TV Show
The family oriented Our House TV show focuses on Jessie Witherspoon and her three children. Jessie's husband passed away and she moved in with her cantankerous father-in-law Gus (Wilford Brimley). The show focused on the typical trials of a family coping with grief, new beginnings and figuring out where they were going in life. Every episode contained some moral that would be detailed by the characters as they learned their lesson too.
Kris (Shannen Doherty) struggles with her new school, because it does not have an Air Force prepatory program and she intends to join the Air Force when she turns 18. David (Chad Allen) turns to Gus after school bullies rough him up. Young Molly faces a dilemma when a frustrated Gus throws all of their toys into the garbage because they leave them out all the time. Hall and Brimley shine in their respective roles. Despite the inherent sentimentality, they effectively display the realism of raising children in the late 1980s.
The show used commercial breaks to freeze frame the scene playing to one portion of the 'house.' By the end of the episode, the entire house would be filled in.
Deidre Hall
Our House is not Deidre Hall's first family-oriented television show. In the 1970s, she starred in Sid and Marty Kroft's Electra Woman and Dyna-Girl, a tongue in cheek lampoon of the 60s Batman and Robin television show. Deidre Hall left Days of Our Lives in 1987 when coordinating her film schedule between the two dramas became too difficult. Hall returned to Days of Our Lives as Dr. Marlena Evans in 1991 and continues to play the role she created in 1976.
Wilford Brimley
Wilford Brimley is a well-known actor appearing in many feature films over the years including The Natural, Cocoon, The Firm and My Fellow Americans. His commercials for Quaker Oats and Liberty Mutual make him a familiar face on television. Brimley worked as a stunt man in westerns filmed in the 1960s. In addition to Our House, he's appeared on The Ben Stiller Show and Seinfeld.
Shannen Doherty
Shannen Doherty's career began with the role of young Jenny Wilder on Little House on the Prairie. She played Almanzo and Laura's niece who came to live with them after her parents died. She appeared in frequent guest spots throughout the 80s on television shows like Airwolf, Highway to Heaven, 21 Jump Street and Magnum P.I.. In 1986, she earned the role of Kris Witherspoon.
In 1989, she made the leap to the big screen as Heather Duke in the dark satire Heathers. Her recognition grew when Aaron Spelling cast her in the role of Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills 90210, a role she would reprise in the 2008 version of 90210 to help launch the new show. In 1999, she joined another Aaron Spelling creation, playing Prue Halliwell in Charmed.
Chad Allen
Chad Allen's role as young David Witherspoon was his first prime time contract role. He later starred with Jane Seymour and Joe Lando (ex-Jake One Life to Live) in Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman. Outted to the world as a homosexual in 2000 by a tabloid, Allen continues to act, direct and produce. In 2008, he played a love interest for Dr. Julian in General Hospital:Night Shift on the SOAPnet channel.
Keri Houlihan
Keri Houlihan played the youngest Witherspoon: Molly. She appeared in many 1980s television shows including Still the Beaver, Night Court and Who's the Boss?. Houlihan provided the voice for the character of Molly in the animated My Little Pony and Friends. Her IMDB report lists her last role as the voice of Marcie in This is America, Charlie Brown in 1988.
