One Life to Live Soap Opera
From LoveToKnow Soap-Operas
Created by the legendary Agnes Nixon, One Life to Live soap opera defied wasp conventions of soap operas of the time by featuring more social, economic and racial diversity in the town.
About One Life to Live Soap Opera
The creation of One Life to Live happened in direct response to the success of the now defunct Another World on NBC. In the late 60s, Agnes Nixon worked for the program as a writer. Her initial title for One Life to Live was Between Heaven and Hell. The network required her to change it because they felt it was too controversial. The show gradually expanded from its 30 minute format to one hour in 1978.
The show is set in the fictional suburb of a large metropolitan Pennsylvania town. The fictional Llanview is within a couple hours traveling distance of network sister show All My Children’s Pine Valley. The shows featured crossovers and mentions, including the use of the Intruder, a tabloid magazine and crossovers with characters like Skye Chandler, Adam Chandler and more.
Prominent Llanview Families
When the show debuted it featured multiple families: the Lords, the Siegels, the Rileys, the Woleks and the Greys. In 2009, the only remaining family from the original families is the Lords in the person of Victoria Lord. Originally portrayed by Gillian Spencer (Daisy, All My Children), the role was taken over by actress Erika Slezak in 1971. For nearly 40 years, Slezak’s powerful performance through Viki’s many relationships, marriages, multiple-personalities and murder mysteries have left their indelible impression on the modern soap opera viewer.
Like Erica Kane on AMC and Tony Geary on General Hospital, fans cannot imagine anyone else in the role of their beloved first lady of Llanview. Viki’s children from her first and second marriages are the center of her world. Unfortunately, her daughter Jessica has inherited her multiple personality disorder.
Mental Illness
The prominence of family mental illness is also very much a part of the tapestry of OLTL. In addition to the psychological problems of the Lords (Viki, Todd and Jessica), the Cramer family shares a history of mental illness and disturbance.
Dorian Cramer Lord, Viki’s rival and former step-mother hides many secrets, among them her family’s struggles with catatonia and psychotic breaks. Nieces Kelly and Blair struggle with their problems and dysfunctions while Kelly’s mother Melinda languishes in a mental institution and Dorian’s own daughter Cassie struggled with a psychotic break.
The addressing of mental disorders and their genetic links is very true to the spirit of diversity that Nixon sought to create.
Great Couples
What would a soap opera be without its great couples? While OLTL has never boasted a true super couple like other shows on television, it has without a doubt created some of the most memorable pairings.
Karen Wolek and Marco Dane
While Karen and Marco were never involved romantically, they shared one of the most pivotal storylines on daytime. Karen lived a dual life as a doctor’s wife and prostitute. Marco was her pimp. When Marco’s twin brother was murdered and Viki was put on trial for it (everyone thought it was Marco), Karen (Judith Light) delivered a powerful reveal of her secrets. The episode remains one of the most talked about in the history of the television show.
Clint and Viki
Clint Buchanan and Victoria Lord shared a wild chemistry of raw, tough cowboy falling in love with a refined lady. Although they came from two different worlds, they shared a powerful romance that would bring them back together time and time again. Clint adopted Viki’s sons from her marriage to Joe Riley: Kevin and Joey. They shared daughter Jessica although Jessica and long-lost twin Natalie. Finally, Clint welcomed Viki’s long-lost daughter Megan into the family. Clint and Viki as a couple, always made sense, in spite of their other relationships.
Tina and Cord
Tina Lord is Viki’s wilder younger sister and Cord is Clint’s good ol’boy son from a relationship back in Texas. Although the two were like oil and water, they shared a magical chemistry that led to adventurous storylines in South America and as well as to mysterious underground cities like Eterna.
Max and Gabrielle
These on-again, off-again lovers shared a tempestuous chemistry. Though they would be hooked up with multiple other characters during their tenure, they share a child and constantly return to each other. Max’s relationship with Luna comes a close second.
Todd and Blair
The tempestuous relationship between Todd and Blair produced two children and years of compelling storytelling. Todd, the villain who led a gang rape of Marty, has been forced to come to grips with who he is and where he came from. He’s had to make amends and he is always struggling with his darker nature despite his love for Blair. Blair, by the same token is no innocent blossom. It’s arguable about whether they are better together or apart.
The One Life to Live soap opera airs on ABC weekdays and during encore performances on SOAPnet.
