Novela del Mar refers to a trilogy of telenovelas featuring the popular Thalia, the Latin American singing sensation and press dubbed ‘Queen of the Telenovela.’ Thalia Sodi (born Ariadna Thalía Sodi y Miranda) starred in a trilogy of remade telenovelas that gained popularity around the world.
Trilogy: Novela del Mar
The Novela del Mar featured the first telenovelas trilogy or story of the three Marias all portrayed by singer and actress Thalia. In each of the three telenovelas, Thalia portrays a poor Maria in her quest for love, acceptance and a happily ever after.
Maria Mercedes
The first Maria, Maria Mercedes is a poor peasant girl who works in the streets selling flowers and lottery tickets to support her brothers and sisters. Her ambitious mother abandoned her drunken father and the responsibility of family weighs heavily on Maria. She is left a place to live by a man who seeks to get even with his greedy relatives. Over time, Maria finds happiness of her own.
Mari-Mar
In Mari-Mar, Thalia plays a young girl who lives with her grandparents on the edge of the sea. She falls in love with the scion of a wealthy family. Her lover agrees to marry her, but the couple must overcome his spiteful step-mother Angelica.
During the series, Angelica frames Mari-Mar for theft and sends her to prison, burns down her grandparents hut (with the grandparents in it) and forges a letter to Mari-Mar from Sergio to claim he never loved her. Mari-Mar is driven to revenge her grief. She learns about society and moves to Mexico City, where she eventually encounters poor Sergio (who doesn’t know what his step-mother did) and his new love.
Maria La del Barrio
In Maria la Del Barrio, Thalia portrays a 15 year old scavenger who is taken in by the wealthy de la Vega family. She is at odds with the matriarch of the household Victoria and her niece Soraya. Eventually, Maria falls in love with the disreputable son Luis, but after they are married he sees her embracing his brother.
Believing Maria to be unfaithful, he disavows her and the child she carries. Maria eventually gives the baby away in a bout of insanity. Luis eventually must rescue her from the asylum to which she is committed, they adopt a new child, but Maria never gives up hope of finding the son she gave up for adoption. Eventually, she does find him, all grown up as a young man.
Popular Around the World
When Maria la Del Barrio aired in the 1990s, it was sold to 45 countries. The popular Mexican singer Thalia rode to fame through this trilogy of telenovelas, making her a household name on four different continents. All three telenovelas are available on DVD.
Thalia Sodi
Born in 1971, Thalia is the youngest of five children. Cast in the role of Sandy in Vaselina (Grease) in 1984, Thalia began pursuing a dream of singing, acting and performing. She was a member of Timbiriche for three years before releasing her own solo albums. Her performances in telenovelas including the Novela del Mar Maria trilogy cinched her fame around the world.
