Home and Away Cast and Crew

From LoveToKnow Soap-Operas

Fans of the long-running Australian soap opera may be interested in learning more about the Home and Away cast and crew. The popular program runs in various countries around the world and has gained a strong following over the years. It is also recognized as one of Australia's most popular programs ever.

About the Home and Away Cast and Crew

As with most soap operas, the Home and Away cast and crew together make up quite a lengthy list! The program, which began in 1988, has seen many cast members come and go through the years. Again, as with so many soap operas, the program features several families who have been mainstays since the very beginning. While characters themselves may have come and gone, the families continue to grow, ensuring some degree of familiarity and comfort with audience members who have been fans of the program since its inception.

Directors

Of course, the program would be nothing without its hardworking crew. Through the years, Home and Away has seen many individuals take on the important director's role. Most directors spend a year or two with the program, typically directing a handful (and sometimes many more) of episodes and sharing the duties with other directors on the team.

Writers

If the directors help bring the program to life, it's the writers who create the building blocks to work with. The Home and Away writing team is consistently impressive; though they also share duties with other writers, individually they are responsible for writing many episodes. Writer Sarah Walker, for example, has been with the program since 2000 and is credited with writing over 50 episodes!

Of course, it takes a great deal of knowledge about the program in order to take on such a major responsibility. Simply knowing the characters' names and having a brief understanding of the story is not enough to turn out an impressive script that will rivet viewers. Writers must be intimately familiar with the program's most minute intricacies – those that make it tick, make it believable to the audience and make it memorable over time.

Writers must also have a thorough understanding of the character's intricacies. While the actors are, in the end, responsible for bringing their characters to life and lending the appropriate mannerisms and quirks that make each role unique, writers possess a certain responsibility in that department, too. Characters that undergo dramatic personality changes, for example, can be credited to the writer's imaginative streak.

Of course, a soap opera being the imaginative, dramatic and fun-filled playground that it is, it's only fitting that the writers would have a field day penning scripts rife with drama, intrigue and the occasional bout of happiness. Home and Away brings these emotions to the small screen day in and day out, much to the delight of devoted viewers.

Cast Members

As crucially important as the crew members are (after all, there would be no show without them!), it's the cast members who make a lasting impression on the audience. Without them, there would be no one to bring the story to life – and in the case of the famed soap opera, no one to fall in love with, no one to root for, no one to root against and no one to bid farewell to in the event of a sudden exit from the program.

Home and Away started out with storylines focused on character Pippa Ross, portrayed by Debra Lawrance, and her many foster children. One of the children was portrayed by then child actress Kate Ritchie, who played young Sally Fletcher. Through the years, the audience witnessed Fletcher's growth on screen as Ritchie herself grew up. In all, the actress spent an impressive 20 years on screen as Fletcher before leaving in April 2008, and she holds the Guinness Record for longest continuing role in an Australian drama.

Another Guinness Record holder is actor Ray Meagher, who has held the role of Alfred Stewart on the program since 1988. Stewart is a mainstay in the fictional program, known especially for his unique quotes (among them "flamin' mongrel") and dramatic family history.

More about the Cast

As with most soap operas, Home and Away has a revolving door. Actors have come and gone over the years; some, like Ritchie and Meagher, have maintained longevity while others have stayed for just a short while. The list of actors is quite diverse, and it's a sure bet that fans of the program are familiar with many of them on a first name basis. I am finding it extremely difficult to contact a script writer for an idea for a soap that would attract so many people. I have an idea and you may get many of these e-mails but I just know this idea would work. Where do I start. Who do I contact.
