Gilmore Girls Theme Song

From LoveToKnow Soap-Operas

“Where You Lead, I Will Follow”, as sung by Carole King and her daughter Louise Goffin, is the Gilmore Girls theme song. Gilmore Girls debuted on the now-defunct WB Network, October 5, 2000. For seven seasons, the Gilmore Girls (Lorelai and her daughter “Rory”) entertained fans with their fast paced dialogue, close mother-daughter relationship and romantic woes.

Stars Hollow and the Gilmore Girls Theme Song

Stars Hollow, Connecticut is the setting for the Gilmore Girls. The small, quirky little town is populated with dozens of unique personalities. Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham also seen in The Pacifier, Evan Almighty, and Dirty Santa) is the manager of the Independence Inn when we meet her. She came to Stars Hollow when Rory (Alexis Bleidel also seen in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Tuck Everlasting) was just a baby and got a job at the Inn as a maid. She worked her way up to manager and along with the Sookie, her clumsy cook and Michel, her French assistant manager (who makes rude an art form) she eventually opens her own Inn after the Independence Inn burns to the ground.

The lyrics of Gilmore Girls theme song refer to the relationship between Lorelai and her daughter Rory. Lorelai and her boyfriend Christopher (frequent guest star David Sutcliffe, now on Private Practice) got pregnant at 16, devastating their blue blood upper crust parents. Lorelai’s troubled relationship with Emily is the catalyst for her leaving her wealthy home in Hartford for the ‘sticks’ where she can do it all herself.

The song was written by Carole King and recorded with her daughter Louise Goffin to be the theme song of the show and is featured in the opening credits for all seven seasons. Carole King is also featured as one of the colorful population of Stars Hollow in her role of Sophie Bloom, the owner of the music store.

Sophie’s influence in the show is limited to Lane and her band, but she gives Lane a place to practice her music away from her mother. The first time Lane air played the drums in Sophie’s music store, Lane discovered the musical path she wanted to follow for her life. The choice leads her to Dan and to the band they form.

Strong Family Relationships

Gilmore Girls Episodes

Named one of the top 100 shows of all time by Time Magazine, the Gilmore Girls explored family relationships, social class structure, independence, romance and the importance of friendship. While central theme of the show focuses on the relationship between Lorelai and Rory, extended families and friends are also integral to the fabric of the program.

This running theme is clear from the begginning of the show. In the pilot episode, Rory is accepted to the prestigious prep school Chilton. The cost of tuition is insanely out of Lorelai’s reach. Lorelai must ask her parents (Edward Hermann and Kelly Bishop) for a loan to cover Rory’s school expenses and agrees to let them back into their lives via a family dinner every Friday night.

While the dialogue of thisw program is often fast paced and witty, it is the rocky times that mark this show’s finest moments. Lorelai is a trail blazer, defining herself in opposition to her family and daughter Rory followed in her footsteps, sharing many of her mother’s quirkier traits. It is only when Rory begins to define herself independently that she and her mother clash, but their love and support of each other is felt in every comical, tragic and familial moment on the show.

The series book-ended the opening scene from the pilot with the closing scene of the series finale: Lorelai and Rory share a meal and their love of a good cup of coffee in Luke’s Diner.

Comments

I loved them too, Piper. I'd hoped after the elections, they'd have done a Stars Hollow movie, letting Rory go home to visit her mom before heading back to reporting. Thanks for visiting Love To Know Soap Operas.
