From LoveToKnow Soap-Operas
Gilmore Girls fan fiction allows fan authors to tell the stories they want to see about Lorelai, Rory, Luke and more. The Gilmore Girls ran for seven years on the WB Network and told the story of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. The show is set in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, New Jersey and is populated by colorful and quirky characters.
Gilmore Girls Fan Fiction: Stars Hollow, Yale, Chilton and More
When Gilmore Girls began, 15 year old Rory received admission to the exclusive Chilton Prep School. Viewers learned that Lorelai managed the Independence Inn although she got her start there as a maid when Rory was a baby. We meet Luke, the gruff owner of Luke’s Diner and we learn about Lorelai’s passion for coffee and her estrangement from her parents.
Fan fiction writers will delve into the years between Lorelai leaving her parents’ home in Hartford and settling in Stars Hollow. They will explore her friendships with Sookie, Michel and other prominent Stars Hollow citizens. While her first meeting with Luke is described in one episode, fan fiction allows fans to write how that meeting may have gone. The beauty of fan fiction is that it is as boundless as the imagination of the writers.
History
Writing fan fiction and sharing it with others dates back to Star Trek fandom of the late 60s and early 70s. Fans of the popular science fiction show would write ‘what if’ and ‘continuing adventure’ stories. Fanzines, hand bound magazines containing fan fiction, would be the next step. Editors would read and accept fan submissions on a chosen theme. Other fans could then purchase the fanzines, priced generally to cover the expense of putting the issues together.
Fan fiction is neither about making money nor about profit margins. First and foremost, fan fiction is written about copyrighted characters and settings, thus making it illegal to profit from infringing on those worlds. Fans write the stories they want to see or read. They tell the stories they wish the show runners told. They also allow a show to live on past its cancellation date and such as is the case for Star Trek keep that fandom alive to propel further development (movies, new series, etc) in the future.
How to Write Fan Fiction
In the case of the Gilmore Girls, fan writers must respect the continuity of the show. If the story details the relationship between Luke and Lorelai, particularly their dating or private moments, then setting it during the sixth season is a better choice than the seventh.
While writers may ignore canon, other fans prefer to see it respected unless the author notes that is set in an alternate reality. For example, what would have happened if Lorelai married Christopher when she was 16? What if Rory got pregnant by Dean or Jess? If fans choose to write what happened after the final episode, there is no canon and they are freed from constraints. For example, Rory left to join the press junket following then Senator Obama’s bid to be the Democratic Nominee for President. As noted in one letter to TVGuide, when President-Elect Obama was declared the winner of the Presidential election, could a Stars Hollow reunion movie be in the offing? After all, Rory could return home now.
Fan writers must also take note of the constant Gilmorisms or pop culture references made throughout the dialogue of the show. In order to write popular or effective fan fiction, the characters should sound like the characters. Kirk should sound stilted and a little crazy and Michel should always sound like snob, but if the characters act out of character (i.e. Lorelai drinks hot tea throughout without a good reason), then fans will be less interested in reading the story.
