The Everwood television show left an indelible mark on viewers in its four short seasons on the air. Consequently, interest in Everwood-related websites, DVDs and books, is still very strong.

About Everwood Television Show

Everwood originally aired on the now defunct WB network from 2002-2006. Despite being cancelled in the United States, Everwood can still be seen in syndication in various countries around the world, including Denmark and France, where primetime soaps are extremely popular.

The series follows workaholic brain surgeon Dr. Andrew Brown (played by Treat Williams), whose life takes a dramatic turn when his wife dies. In a moment of self-reflection Andy realizes that he has regrettably neglected his two children in order to further his career. To make amends he decides to move his family from chaotic Manhattan to the idyllic small town of Everwood, Colorado. Unfortunately, Andy’s kids 15-year-old Ephram (played by Gregory Smith) and nine-year-old Delia (played by Vivien Cardone) don’t exactly embrace the move.

Season One Highlights

Season one focuses on the upheavals felt by the entire Brown family as they adjust to life in a small town. After some animosity, Andy begins a friendly rivalry with the town’s other medical expert Dr. Harold Abbott (played by Chris Pratt). The cranky doctor happens to be the father of Amy Abbott (played by Emily VanCamp), who Ephram has a crush on.

Unfortunately, for Ephram, Amy has a boyfriend named Colin Hart (played by Mike Erwin), who is in a coma. Soon Amy befriends Ephram, who convinces his dad to work his magic to revive Colin. The good doctor is successful and soon, Colin is awake. Ephram and Colin end up becoming friends, but it’s later revealed that Colin has suffered complications from his first surgery that manifest in emotional and physical outbursts. Colin's parents ask Dr. Brown to operate again, but that surgery doesn’t go well at all.

Season Two Highlights

Season two opens with Colin’s death. Everyone in Everwood blames Andy for "killing" Colin and they stop going to his clinic and shun his children. Andy eventually admits to Ephram that he could have saved Colin's life, but he would have ended up severely disabled and he promised Colin that he wouldn’t allow him to live that way. In dealing with Colin’s death Amy falls into a deep depression and begins experimenting with drugs. After a bad drug trip Amy snaps out of her depression returns to “normal.”

Meanwhile, Ephram finds new love with his sister’s 20-year-old babysitter Madison Kellner (played by Sarah Lancaster). Ephram eventually loses his virginity to Madison, who later becomes pregnant with his child. Andy offers to pay Madison if she agrees to keep the pregnancy a secret from Ephram. The concerned dad worries that his son will feel compelled to marry Madison if he learns about the baby, and Andy doesn’t want his offspring’s future dreams to go unfilled. The end of season two has Ephram being accepted to a summer program at the prestigious Julliard School of Music. He is torn between going to New York and staying with Madison, but eventually sides with school and the young couple embark on a long-distance relationship.

Season Three Highlights

In season three Madison cuts off all ties with the Brown family, and Ephram develops a tighter friendship with Amy. The relationship moves to the next level and Amy decides to sleep with Ephram. The couple runs into problems when Ephram is granted an interview with Julliard School, and runs into Madison. She eventually tells Ephram about the baby that she put up for adoption. Andy later tells Ephram that he knew about Madison’s pregnancy. An irate Ephram hastily forfeits his Julliard audition in an attempt to get back at his father. Back in Everwood, Amy reluctantly agrees to help Ephram locate the baby, but the matter proves fatal for their relationship and they break-up. By the end of the season Ephram, decides to give up on his musical dream and sets out to backpack through Europe.

Meanwhile, Andy ends up having an affair with the wife of one of his patients. His guilt over the illicit relationship leads to a bleeding gastric ulcer. After he recovers, Andy considers taking a job as a surgeon in Chicago, but his friends persuade him to stay in Everwood.

Season Four Highlights

Ephram returns to Everwood in season four, but his relationship with Andy continues to be strained. Ephram enrolls at a local college, begins giving piano lessons and eventually his relationship with Andy improves.

Season four also sees the reunion of Amy and Ephram, and Ephram and his long-lost piano. His rekindled passion for music leads Ephram to develop a unique relationship with a talented student named Kyle Hunter (played by Steve R. McQueen). Ephram helps Kyle comes to terms with his homosexuality and helps him get into Julliard. Inspired by Kyle’s success, Ephram transfers to a different college to major in music education.

Meanwhile, Andy comes to terms with the fact that he has feelings for neighbor Nina Feeney (played by Stephanie Niznik), with whom he has been friends with since moving to Everwood. After taking a cathartic trip to New York to say goodbye to his late wife, Andy returns to Everwood to propose to Nina. Coincidentally, Ephram and Amy also decide to give their relationship another try and the series draws to an end.

Catching Up with Everwood

Everwood television show producers had hoped that the sudsy serial would be renewed for a fifth season when The WB and UPN merged to form The CW Television Network. Unfortunately, network executives had other plans, and Everwood was cancelled.

Since the show’s demise, loyal fans in the United States have had to get their Everwood fix via DVDs. As of February 2009, only the first season of Everwood has been released on DVD. However, in late 2008 it was announced that a complete second season DVD would be released in Spring 2009.
