About Eastenders

The popular prime-time soap opera EastEnders made its first television debut in the mid 1980's in the United Kingdom. It quickly became a guilty pleasure for many people and remains one of the most watched television shows in the United Kingdom. EastEnders became so popular in fact, that it knocked Britain's beloved Coronation Street out of the spot it had held as the number one rated soap opera for decades.

EastEnders has also won many British Soap Awards such as Most Popular Serial Drama and Best Soap, as well as British Academy Television Awards like Best British Soap. Both EastEnders and Coronation Street currently remain extremely popular among both fans and critics.

The show was created by producer Julia Smith and editor Tom Holland. Some of the characters names and story lines are drawn from Smith and Holland's personal familial experiences, with a little extra drama thrown in there, of course. It is a soap opera after all and what kind of soap doesn't have a whole lot of drama?

The Town of Walford

EastEnders takes place in the fictional town of Walford, London, England. The story lines and plots follow the lives of the characters that live in the Albert Square (named so after Queen Victoria's husband Albert) area of the Walford. The show focuses on the inner workings and dynamics of larger, working class families with a strong matriarchal character at the helm of each family. The main families in which the show focuses are:

  • The Beale's
  • The Fowler's
  • The Branning's
  • The Mitchell's

There are many other interesting characters on the show, including bad boys, snarky women, meddling mothers, no-good gangsters, handsome playboys and the beautiful women they become involved with, it does revolve mainly around the members of the above listed families.

Focusing on Social Issues

EastEnders has all the drama and scandal of any other soap on television, but it is also known for focusing on real social issues such as:

  • Homosexuality
  • Drug addiction
  • Homophobia
  • Teen pregnancy
  • Racism
  • Sexism
  • Domestic violence
  • Divorce
  • Alcoholism
  • Mental illness
  • Prostitution

The show has focused on many tough social issues over the years, increasing awareness about important subjects.
