Daytime Emmy Winners
From LoveToKnow Soap-Operas
Soap opera fans and others who enjoy daytime television breathlessly awaiting the announcement of the Daytime Emmy winners typically find out the results during the Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony, held each year during the summer.
Daytime Emmy Awards Ceremony
The annual Daytime Emmy awards show takes place in the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California, and is aired on ABC. During the ceremony, nominations and winners are announced and usually a Lifetime Achievement Award is given to one special nominee. The Emmy Awards are handed out by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, with the nominees and winners recognized in areas, such as daytime shows, news, sports, public broadcasting, and technology.
Daytime Emmy Winners
While of course there are those who are disappointed in the outcome of the awards ceremony, others rejoice to discover they are winners of the distinguished award. Whether they are winners or losers, however, the ceremony is always the place to be for many of the Hollywood elite, while the rest of America watches at home. There are several categories in which awards are issued, including recognition for outstanding programs as well as the most talented actors and actresses.
Program Specific Awards
Each year, one program is named as the outstanding drama series. In addition to naming one program as the top drama series, there are also program specific awards for the best directing team and casting. Awards are also given for the program that exhibits outstanding lighting, editing, makeup, and music. Further, the program with the best art direction, set direction, and scenic design is recognized.
Artist Awards
There are awards for lead actors and actresses as well as for those who take on supporting roles in their programs. Further, there are awards for outstanding younger actors and actresses. In some years, the actors recognized are members of the cast for the top program, but not always.
The Criteria
Obviously, everyone will not agree with what actor or show actually receives an award for a particular category. Members of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), which are both nonprofit organizations involved in the supervision of the Emmys, select nominees from all submitted entries. Only active members may suggest nominations, and those nominations can only be made by others who are employed in the same category. In other words, actors can nominate actors, and directors can nominate directors. The winners are chosen by a panel of peers.
Fans are often outraged when a favorite show or performer is overlooked during the awards ceremony. This is typically because they don't understand the process of selecting a winner. Emmy winners are typically selected based on their work in only two of the episodes they've performed in during the calendar year. This means that a winner may have only had a featured role for a short time but still win, leaving some fans and other performers a bit outraged at times. Flashbacks that are sometimes used in episodes cannot be considered, however, since the performance must be based on that particular year's work. Does this work? Many say "yes", while others argue that media should have more of a say in the nominations and the winners.
