Popular Trends
While some watch this particular awards show to find out if their favorite actors and actresses will receive Daytime Emmy Award nominations or become winners, others are simply curious as to the competition that heats up between the various networks. Not only are the performers and directors competing for the coveted awards, but the networks and shows also battle it out to see which one receives the most nominations and awards as well. Categories such as Networks with most Daytime Emmy Award Nominations, Show with Most Daytime Emmy Nominations, and Show with Most Emmy Awards are typically announced as well.
Daytime Emmy Award Nominations and Winners
There are several categories that feature nominations and ultimately a winner. Members of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), both nonprofit organizations involved in the supervision of the Emmys, select nominees from all submitted entries. Active members of these organizations nominate others who are in their same category. This means that only performers can nominate performers, makeup artists can nominate makeup artists, and so on. The winners are chosen by a panel of industry peers.
Those performers or shows which are nominated are judged on performances that aired during the calendar year. Flashbacks cannot be used as part of the performance reel when considering nominations. The reel must also be edited so that it shows only those scenes that the actor performed in.
Determining the Winners
Before 2003, nominations were selected based on an overall vote from each show. This was deemed unfair as larger shows had larger casts, thus creating an improper balance of votes. In 2003, however, each show was asked to select two pre-nominees for each category. The pre-nominees submitted edited reels which showed their performances, and these reels were screened by a panel of peers. While the panel is comprised of other performers, its members cannot vote for their own shows. Those who received the most votes in each category were then designated as final nominees.
Another change occurred during the 2008 season. Because performers under 25 fall into the Younger Actor and Actress awards category, there was some confusion over those who turn 25 during the calendar year. An actor who does so may choose work during that year that was performed before he or she turned 25. If he chooses to submit work for that year after he turns 25, however, he cannot be considered a nominee in the younger category and must be considered for the adult categories instead.
