Daily Update on Young and the Restless
From LoveToKnow Soap-Operas
Need a daily update on Young and the Restless? Were you watching when Victor suffered his heart attack and Jack stepped over him, leaving him to die? This storyline occurred over a decade ago on CBS’ number one daytime drama, but the ripples of that event continue to play out on the show.
Daily Update on Young and the Restless Needs
Once upon a time, the pacing of the show was such that you didn’t need a daily update on Young and the Restless. Bill Bell crafted a show that told every beat and nuance of the tale. Scenes could literally last days. While fans used to the faster pacing of other daytime dramas complained, fans of Y&R knew that if they were unfortunate and missed an episode, they wouldn’t miss every beat of the story and could be caught up relatively quickly.
Head Writer Changes
Bill Bell retired in 1998. At the time, he was succeeded by Kay Alden. Alden worked with Bell for years prior to taking over the head writer reigns. The show continued much in the same manner as it had under Bell’s stewardship. In 2006, Lynn Marie Latham took over as head writer and the show’s pacing shifted perceptibly.
Older viewers complained about the abruptness of the changes to cast and pacing. Reveals were not drawn out, the beats of the story were not drawn out for every nuance to be appreciated and suddenly, fans couldn’t afford to miss a day or they might miss a key scene that changed the soap landscape. The changes were not applauded by all the fans. In fact, many found that by emulating other daytime dramas, Y&R lost the unique flavor that made it the top daytime soap opera.
Core Cast
The loss of core cast members also contributed to fans general dissatisfaction with the soap opera. Patriarch John Abbott died, leaving his children bereft and at the mercy of his despicable last wife Gloria. Actor Jerry Douglas had not expressed interest in leaving the show, but he was let go despite fan furor. Douglas was brought back to play son Jack’s conscience, but it wasn’t enough for the fans and while they enjoy seeing Douglas on the show, the Abbott family faced more attrition when Eileen Davidson (Ashley Abbott) was let go from Y&R and transitioned over to sister show The Bold and the Beautiful.
Find Daily Updates
Fans looking for daily updates on their favorite CBS drama have a lot of options from fan message boards to devoted soap sites. CBS also offers viewers a chance to watch episodes online, which means office workers can tune in on their lunch break to catch up on missed episodes. Y&R remains the number one daytime drama despite overall decline in ratings. Beware reading daily updates on message boards particularly if they are marked ‘spoiler’ and you want to watch the episodes unbiased.
