Daily Recaps of Soap Operas

From LoveToKnow Soap-Operas

Viewers need daily recaps of soap operas to keep their fingers on the pulse of what’s happening on their favorite shows. The soap opera medium is one that thrives on daily interaction and the must tune in factor. While the age of Internet communications, daily updates and sneak previews reduce the ‘must-see’ component of the daytime medium, it does not detract from fans' need to know what’s going on.

Who Reads Daily Recaps of Soap Operas?

Fans of daytime soap operas range in age, gender and career choice. Career office workers are often on tight schedules and find themselves pushing to get through daily tasks before and after work. For these viewers, watching their soaps every day may not be an option. Daily recaps of soap operas provide them with insight into the relevant events on the show and may, in some cases, replace watching the show.

Interpreting Daily Recaps of Soap Operas

There is a drawback to reading daily recaps, and that is that the information may be biased based on the focus of the person who writes the recaps. For example, on fan-based message boards, recaps may be available live while the show is airing. The person doing the recaps will present his or her interpretation of the show’s events. For some, this may mean allowing their own dislike of characters to color their recap.

When Elizabeth and Jason were trapped in an elevator during the Metro Court bombing, multiple recappers were sharing their impressions of the scenes shared by the two characters. It was a momentous reveal moment, because Elizabeth told Jason that he, not her husband, was the father of her unborn child. For fans of the couple, these scenes were a huge payoff and reward. Their recaps covered each and every nuance of the event. For others who disliked the pairing, their recaps either ignored the development or were littered with snarky commentary.

When looking for a resource to read daily recaps on, fans are advised to vet their sources carefully. Some outlets will provide dispassionate coverage, others will be biased and still others will present details on front burner characters but may fail to mention entirely a b-roll storyline that also played that day. This can be very frustrating for viewers who want to know everything that happened.

Good Daily Recap Sites

Finding a good daily recap site is like finding a good hair stylist. You have to find one that meets all your needs and not just the summary of the episode. Soap Opera Digest offers episode recaps over a 10 to 12 day airing span. Those recaps are not going to cover the thorough details of every interaction, but instead hit just the highlights. The publication's recaps website, on the other hand, does offer daily recaps that are several paragraphs in length and provide detailed character interactions. They are updated each day, typically after the programs air on the East Coast.

The problem with recaps like these is that for some shows, such as All My Children, the recaps for the East Coast showing may be a full day or more ahead of the show’s airing in some markets. Dallas, for example, airs episodes of All My Children at 11 a.m. the day after they aired on the East Coast. Dallas fans must then vet recap sites if they don’t want to be spoiled too far ahead of their available watching.

Soap Central offers a daily recaps section populated with the most recent recap to summarizing the previous week’s episodes. TV Guide also offers shorter summary recaps in their soaps section. It is updated each day for the previous day’s episodes.
