Melina Kanakaredes
Melina Kanakaredes began her television career on Guiding Light when she was cast as Eleni Andros in 1991. Eleni was a love interest for both Alan-Michael Spaulding and Frank Cooper. She was nominated for two Daytime Emmy awards for her portrayal. She left Guiding Light in 1995.
She was also featured in guest starring roles on NYPD Blue, Due South, Oz, The Practice and Northern Exposure. Kanakaredes was actually under consideration for the lead role in My Big Fat Greek Wedding but she turned the role down because of her pregnancy. She landed the lead role as Dr. Sydney Hansen on Providence and in 2004, she landed the lead role of Detective Stella Bonasera on CSI:NY.
Paula Cale
Cale worked primarily as a theater actress appearing in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. She later took a role as McGovern on Murphy Brown. She was cast in the role of Joanie, Sydney's younger sister. Cale was hesitant as first to take the role, but shined as the jealous sister who made her older sister feel guilty.
Seth Peterson
Peterson played Robbie, Sydney's younger brother Robbie. Robbie was a bit of a bad boy and created havoc for his family. Peterson has worked in independent features and landed a recurring role on Burn Notice in 2007 as burned spy Michael Westen's bad at being a bad boy younger brother Nate.
Mike Farrell
Best known for his role as Captain B.J. Hunnicutt on M*A*S*H from 1975 to 1983, Farrell played Jin Hansen, Sydney's father. Over the years, Farrell has appeared in many television shows including The Monkees, I Dream of Jeannie, Banacek and Marcus Welby, M.D. Farrell originated the role of Scott Banning on Days of Our Lives in 1970.
Concetta Tomei
Concetta Tomei was featured in many off-Broadway productions before moving to Los Angeles and appearing in many successful television productions including China Beach, Max Headroom and Judging Amy. On Providence she appeared as Lynda Hansen, Sydney's mother. Although her character passed away in the first episode, she continued to appear on the series in her daughter's dreams.
Leslie Silva
Leslie Silva appeared in the first season as Sydney's best friend. She ran a free clinic which she then turned over to Sydney when she moved away in the second season. Silva appeared as a guest star on many dramas including ER, Homicide: Life on the Streets, Enterprise, CSI:Miami and Numb3rs.
Providence on DVD
Providence ended after five seasons when Kanakaredes opted not to renew her contract. Viewers were surprised by the abrupt ending, although the last two episodes featured Sydney's wedding. The show's more popular episodes are available on The Providence Collection.
