Soap Opera Discussion Groups
Media Domain’s site is just one of many soap opera discussion groups on the Internet. These types of discussion boards provide fans with a venue to vent, commiserate and celebrate their favorite storylines, hated villains, beloved heroines and hot soaps hunks.
Many soap opera fans love to interact about where they want their favorite ‘story’ to go, and they are vehement in their opposition when roadblocks, obstacles or poor storytelling get in their way. While discussion groups cannot replace actual person-to-person chat about an episode or storyline, many fans enjoy the anonymity and availability of online discussion groups.
Even though they do not advertise their presence, soap producers and media specialists often visit soap discussion boards in order to keep a finger on the pulse of fan discussions.
As the World Turns Storylines
The difficulty in soap opera storylines is they are never meant to have a neat beginning, middle or end as they are part of an ongoing serial format and some storylines require years of investment to truly appreciate.
Many storylines over the years have enraged intrigued and stumped fans. James Stenbeck, a perennial villain returned time and again to torture the citizens of Oakdale, the fictional town where As the World Turns is set in. James Stenbeck was married to Barbara, fathered Paul and had an affair with Emily. His son David carried on his father’s legacy by terrorizing various characters, kidnapping Lily’s baby and making Julia his accomplice as well as contributing to her eventual insanity.
In the mid-1990s, Holden lost his memory of Lily Walsh and their love affair. The memory loss persisted for a long time, leaving Lily and Holden fans mourning their love. Lily embarked on a series of bad relationships before reuniting with Holden, but not before giving birth to another man’s son.
In the early 2000s, Lily’s son Luke struggled with his homosexuality and during a fight with his mother; she fell down the stairs and into a coma. The storyline proved successful with fans as Luke’s sexual identity was folded into typical daytime story drama.
