About Anna Paquin on True Blood
The accent Anna Paquin sports as Sookie Stackhouse on True Blood is similar to the accent she affected as the mutant Rogue in the three X-Men films. The actress, however, was born in Canada and raised in New Zealand. At the tender age of 10, she earned the first star on her acting resume opposite Academy Award winner Holly Hunter in The Piano.
Paquin’s roles include films that put her opposite multiple stars from Sean Penn to Kevin Spacey (Hurlyburly), Diane Lane and Viggo Mortensen (A Walk on the Moon), Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry (X-Men, X2 and X-Men The Last Stand). The quiet actress is known as much for her body of work both in and out of genres as she is for her talent, poise and self-possession.
The actress attended Columbia University for one year while expanding her resume to include stage work in New York and London. Nominated for multiple awards, Anna Paquin’s star continues to rise with her casting in the pivotal role of heroine Sookie Stackhouse based on the Charlaine Harris novels.
True Blood
In 2007, Anna Paquin won the role of Sookie Stackhouse in Alan Ball’s new HBO series True Blood. The series is based on Harris’ The Southern Vampire Mysteries. Sookie Stackhouse is a telepath who works as a waitress in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps. Sookie meets Bill Compton, first official vampire resident of her town, Bon Temps, and falls in love.
The HBO series features sex, violence, nudity, profanity and tempestuous Louisiana steam and heat. The series is likened to that of a saucy gumbo, spicy with a definite kick. Paquin’s role requires some nudity. In interviews with TV Guide and other news outlets, Paquin describes the choreography that goes into filming the scenes reduces some of the sexiness for the actors.
In a case of life imitating art, Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, the actor who plays bill, began dating after filming the pilot episode for True Blood. It helps that her partner is also her real life boyfriend.
Beyond True Blood
Season Two of True Blood debuted on HBO in June 2009 to stellar ratings. Expectations for a third season remain high. In April, 2009 Paquin appeared in the CBS TV film The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler. In the film, Paquin portrays a Catholic social worker in the Warsaw Ghetto who saves many Jewish children.
Other films awaiting release of 2009 include Margaret, about a student named Lisa Cohen who witnesses a fatal bus crash in New York City. Trick 'r Treat features Paquin in the role of Laurie, a woman who dresses as Little Red Riding Hood and is stalked as a part of the film’s horror anthology.
