Fans who can’t wait to know what will happen next on their favorite soap opera can check out the Internet for the latest gossip, spoilers, news, speculation and more. The trick about reading scoops and spoilers is that sometimes they are indistinguishable from each other.

When Zach and Greenlee were lost and presumed dead, many spoilers teased that the two would end up in bed together. After all, Zach’s actions are the reason that Kendall ended up pregnant with frenemy Greenlee’s dream baby rather than the surrogacy she and Kendall planned. Zach is also Kendall’s husband and their relationship has often been fraught with tension. So if Greenlee and Zach ended up sleeping together, well that’s just good soap drama right? But speculation and spoilers were wrong. It was Kendall who ended up in bed with her own former lover and Greenlee’s man of the moment Aidan.

Unfortunately, scoops and spoilers can defeat the suspense that is inherent to watching soap operas. Internet fans remember, often fondly, the days before they were ‘spoiled’ to storylines. There was less time to shred them and more time to enjoy them and be surprised. When Erica chose to ‘abort’ her child with Jeff, fans were on the edge of their seat and tuned in to watch every moment and for some, hoping she would change her mind.

Flash forward to when Erica’s daughter Bianca discovered she was pregnant with her rapist’s child. Would she seek an abortion? Fans didn’t need to tune in to find out, because scoops and spoilers filled the soap opera websites with enough speculation and spoilers to fill several episodes. Ultimately Bianca chose not to, but there was no down-to-the-wire suspense on the decision – the fans already knew.

Not all spoilers are bad. Sometimes, spoilers can re-energize a fan's interest in a daytime soap, particularly if they’ve been unhappy with focus on some characters and lack of focus on others. Scoops and spoilers were among the first to announce that Darnell Williams would be returning to All My Children in the role of Jesse Hubbard and many an old fan tuned in just to see that.
