Rumor Patrol
There is no shortage of rumors in the soap world. The rumor mill is constantly churning out reports on popular soap characters and their individual storylines. Unfortunately, not everyone realizes that these reports are in fact rumors, and not based on facts. Granted, there are times when rumors prove true, but soap insiders are quick to point out that in most cases rumors that begin online do not come to fruition.
The majority of soap opera rumors involve casting information. Loyal fans become attached to certain characters and are interested in knowing about their comings and goings. Since actual contract information is confidential and extremely hard to come by, the majority of the statements disseminated on soap opera websites come from individuals who have no way to check their facts. The same goes for storyline information. When a popular soap opera, such as All My Children debuts a hot plot, the rumor mill works overtime spewing out statements that are based solely on speculation and not facts.

Popular All My Children Rumors
All My Children has been at the heart of many rumors since the show began in 1970. Some of the most popular were generated in the last two decades and include:
Finola's Future
Actress Finola Hughes joined the cast of All My Children in 1999. Hughes’ addition to All My Children was clouded by speculation and controversy, and even before her first scene aired, rumors ran rampant. Fans were in a tizzy trying to figure out if Hughes would be playing Anna Devane, a role that the actress created in 1985 on General Hospital. It turned out that instead of playing the supposedly deceased Anna, Hughes debuted on All My Children as Alexandra Devane, Anna's twin sister.
Not all fans were pleased with Hughes’ return to daytime TV. Some General Hospital fans felt betrayed by Hughes’ choice to take a job on another soap. Those same fans were also ticked that All My Children had "hijacked" a character from another show.
Another big rumor generated with Hughes' return was her alleged megabucks salary. Some All My Children fans started a rumor that Hughes' sizeable salary resulted in the dismissal of other cast members in attempt to free up cash for the superstar.
Bye-bye Brooke
In 2006 an explosion of rumors hit the Internet regarding actress Julia Barr’s future on All My Children. Barr played Brooke English for nearly 30 years on the daytime serial, before she exited Pine Valley.
Within weeks of Barr’s departure, chatter started when an entry on a popular soap website claimed that Barr had agreed to return to All My Children. The posting set off a flurry of rumors about the actress’ possible return. Some claimed that ABC reconsidered ditching some its long-time veterans in favor of younger performers, while others speculated that Barr had a change of heart. In the end the rumors proved false.
Greenlee-Go-Round
Is she staying or is she going? That question fueled hundreds of Internet rumors in 2007 and 2008. Fans wanted to know what was going on with Rebecca Budig and her character Greenlee Smythe. When the actress left the role in 2007, it was later recast and relative newcomer Sabine Singh took over as Greenlee. Then, a few weeks later rumors surfaced claiming that Singh was getting axed and fan favorite Budig would be returning to All My Children. Turns out the rumors were partially true. Singh did get the boot and Budig did return, but only temporarily. Budig left the show again in 2009. Now, rumor has it that another actress will debuted as Greenlee’s long lost sister.
A Warning About Rumors
Regardless of which soap you watch, take note that rumors are almost always based on speculation. Don't believe rumors about soap stars, as most of them prove to be loaded with false information.
