How does Nathan Fillon feel about his soap opera roots?

ABC soap spoilers are all about the soap opera storylines, actors and characters in the past, the present and the future. Visit any ABC soap opera message board and you will find fans debating spoilers as they would apply to a character depending on who is playing it. For example, spoilers about Dixie run rampant if actress Cady McClain is associated with the rumor.

Spoilers are not always based on fact either. EW gossip columnist Michael Ausiello is forever posting blind items to his blog about potential hiring’s, firings, love matches and more that send fans into a tizzy. Those blind items quickly make the rounds with ABC soap names plugged in leading to stories like the ones circulating about Grey’s Anatomy for months. Rumors about the impending departure of T.R. Knight and his Grey’s original character George began with a blind item in an Ausiello column that had fans putting one and seven together to come up with three.

Spoilers Don’t Have to Be True

Fans who follow General Hospital, One Life to Live and All My Children rely on spoilers to let them know when to tune in. Fans of primetime soap operas use spoilers to keep track of where their favorite storylines are going. In the 2008-2009 television season, Grey’s Anatomy challenged fans when they brought the character Denny Duquette back in Izzie Stevens visions. When Izzie and Denny embarked on a sexual relationship, fans protested and the spoilers began to turn them away in droves.

Later developments in the storyline revealed that Doctor Stevens suffered from cancer and a brain tumor. Her visions of Denny were a symptom, not a jump the shark moment. Spoiler free fans enjoyed the storyline far more than those who looked for spoilers everywhere.

Drama, Character Development and More

Many writers and producers dislike spoilers because they hamper the drama, the ability to tell stories and to reveal character development. Some writers deliberately set out to mislead fans by publishing false spoilers. Shonda Rimes, the creative force behind Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice engages in this very popular practice.

Producers of General Hospital have used misdirection by sending out false spoilers, particularly when needing to recast a popular character (Carly Corinthos) or bringing back a popular veteran (Rick Springfield, Finola Hughes, Emma Samms).

Fans would be wise to not believe all published ABC soap spoilers no matter the source. The only way to know for sure what is going to happen is to tune into your favorite ABC soap opera.
